The Audible Pop is Not Necessary for Successful Spinal High-Velocity Thrust Manipulation in Individuals with Low Back Pain. Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
The objective of this study was to determine a relationship between and audible pop and symptomatic improvement with the treatment of spinal manipulation with patients complaining of low back pain. Patients were given a manipulation and were reassessed 48 hours after the manipulation for changes in ranges of motion, and pain scale scores. The audible pop occurred in 50 of 71 patients during the manipulative procedure. Those who had an audible pop and those who did not improved over time and suggests that the occurrence of a manipulative pop would not improve the odds of achieving a dramatic reduction in symptoms after the manipulation for low back pain.
At Fall Creek Chiropractic we treat the patient with the patients condition in mind. We base our success upon the patients improvement, not whether an audible pop is obtained.
Distraction Manipulation Reduction of an L5-S1 Disk Herniation. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.
The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of chiropractic distraction technique with patients diagnosed with disc herniations. This particular study was done on the L5-S1 disc, which is the most common site of disc herniations. Imaging determined the location of the herniation and was performed both prior to chiropractic treatment and after. The patient presented with symptoms in her low back and right leg along with positive orthopaedic tests to confirm the diganosis. A distraction type of chiropractic manipulation, electrical stimulation, and exercises were given and complete relief of sciatic pain and nearly complete relief of low back pain occurred. In conclusion, chiropractic distraction manipulation was determined to be an effective treatment of lumbar disc herniation.
At Fall Creek Chiropractic we utilize a technique known as Cox Flexion-Distraction that provides the traction/distraction application for our low back disc protrusion/herniation patients. It is a very effective, gentle treatment for those suffering from "sciatic" type symtoms. We also provide electrical stimulation along the symtomatic leg for reduced symptoms.
